Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are common but vary in severity. Some people will experience only one or two periods of intense, immobilizing panic or anxiety, while others deal with these symptoms daily. For the latter, their anxiety can be so intense that they have trouble making basic decisions or take part in day-to-day activities. Some people's anxiety is triggered by a reminder of a past trauma or being around large groups of people.

Finding ways to cope with anxiety is necessary for everyone, but particularly those who have severe panic or anxiety. There are scores of symptoms associated with anxiety disorders, but some of the most common physical symptoms are rapid heartbeat, sweating, chest pain, and difficulty catching breath. Mental or cognitive symptoms can include irritability, feeling detached from life, difficulty sleeping, obsession and feeling trapped. Dramatic mood swings and difficulty creating and maintaining relationships are also signs that an anxiety disorder may be present.

If you think you may have an anxiety order, it is important to see psychologist for a diagnosis. Psychologist Jacqueline Saad principal of our practice, assists individuals dealing with anxiety. Some of the management techniques used to control anxiety are based on simply being aware of the emotions you are feeling. If you can identify what it is that makes you most anxious, you can learn ways to deal with the stress in that specific situation or can find ways to avoid situations that stress you out. Deep breathing and meditation also help calm minds and bodies during panic or anxiety attacks. Having someone to talk to who understands your situation is also very useful. Whether this is a psychologist, a close friend, or a family member, having someone to open up to can be encouraging and calming. Once you have someone you trust who knows you suffer from anxiety, you can talk with them during panic or anxiety attacks, when you feel on coming on, or even when you're feeling fine, just to check in.
